Pup Life

Growing up with pups, I loved them. However, one dog shifted that love into pure adoration.

“Mom, Dad, we… have a visitor.” I could barely get the words out.

With two paws planted on the low window ledge, a small black creature peered into our dining room window. Saying— “I’m home. Wanna let me in?”

My Mom holding Peanut Head!

In our backyard, of brick walls, there is no way this pup “arrived” unassisted. Of course, we searched for his people and, quickly realized, we were them. I often joked, and still sort of believe, we’d find a parachute and slung off Snoopy bomber goggles. ID tag: HEAVEN

Fresh out of college, Jalapeño Peanut Head O’Manley helped me apply for jobs. A silent and steady encourager, with my thigh as a partial blanket, he tucked into the crease of the couch. We’d need breaks from the “we are looking for more experience” emails. I’d lie down on the floor and Nut would circle me for “chalk drawing” time. A cheerleader of puppy proportions; he traced quick steps around my body–stopping only for kiss breaks.

Our active dreaming paid off. Peanut sat beside me the day Carnival Cruise Lines called, interviewed and offered me my dream job—Social Hostess.

Sailing the high seas, I missed him the most. Everyone else I could “talk to” during my Sunday calls. But Nut’s love language wasn’t words of affirmation— more quality time. However, he’d hear me on the other side and lick the phone.

Nutter was happiest with his people, especially me (hey, this is my blog lol). In fact, studies show location doesn’t matter—people do. Dogs have and will travel miles to reunite with theirs. It’s simply a bonus if their pack resides in a lovely spot.

This summer, I spot all the creatures basking in Northern California's beauty. Hiking in San Rafael, I spotted a plastic “puppy bubble” built into a backyard fence. Low to the ground, just like Peanut’s perch, I felt love for him and the humans offering pets a window into the world.

Daily, a forest fur baby “shows up”, peers outside and receives provisions. Not just food and basic care—but opportunities for true delight. Their small sphere helps me see and share my current view.

I’m pet-sitting* around the US while growing my business**.  I’m happiest around soft creatures and, as word gets out, my calendar fills with pupper-tunities.

Surprising Austin with a school pickup (when he didn’t know I was in town) was an Auntie LuLu bucket list item and life highlight!

Top priorities:

A). exploring beautiful places

B). spending significant time with loved ones

As I write this, one of my best friends in the world is by my side. We both greet the world with wide-open arms, active dreaming and consistent laughter. More comes when I tell her, “Meggy, dogs wouldn’t know what to do with the 45-minute coffee calendared a month in advance!”

Stuffed Easter eggs one Sunday at church & help Oliver hunt them the next = Aunt Bug BLISS

Last year, I could barely plan past two days and I stalled out on sharing. In one sitting, it’s overwhelming and impossible to read everybody in.  I’m full of stories and will offer them in peaceful pieces.

Instead, true to Brave Tutu, I’ll lean into small moments and their power. They window me into the incredible now, where dogs serve as my mentors.

I’m truly living my best life as I lean into an inspired puppy perspective:

Loki at his home parish of St. Francis Episcopal in Novato, CA!

  • I take long walks and use all my senses.

  • For focused stretches of time, I lose myself while working extremely hard.

  • I chase my business (ball) as it’s all that matters—then I happily release, rest & repeat.

  • When I’m with my people, I’m 100% present.

  • Nap.

  • Always on the lookout for a treat (beverages are paramount).

  • Never forget a spot that offered a surprise (Max, nephew pup, that chicken bone from 10 years ago is gone! But I admire your zest).

  • Dig in and trust delight is immanent.

  • Regularly return to locations that give joy (spectacular hikes & iced cokes at favorite gas stations). This includes Novato’s St. Francis Episcopal

my wonderful “Pup Church” of the Summer! Averaging 3-6 Pup-gregants each Sunday!

  • I’m delighted to share my skills (toys) with other writers via workshops, mentoring and publicity support.

  • Receive available love and enthusiastically give it back.

  • On meanderings, I’m not rushed or worried about holding anyone up.

  • Devour goodness put before me.

  • Daily pursue active dreaming. *cue puppy paws running during sleep*

  • I settle into opportunities.

  • Know good things when I have it.

  • I trust my gut, sense true character and conserve the lavishing of love for safe people.

  • Value a sunny spot.

  • Stretch because it feels good.

  • Happiest days are swim days (which is basically everyday).

  • Meet friends everywhere.

What resonates from this list? What might you dig into today?

As word spreads of priorities, sitting queries in beautiful places flow in and feed my lifestyle. Like Peanut, in 2024, I somehow know the right space to be at the right time. And I’m going where I’m invited.

Love,

Bekah

P.S. My next class, Picture Book 101 Workshop: Crafting Stories for Illustrations, is in person on Aug. 25 at Lark & Owl Booksellers in Georgetown, Texas.

P.P.S. I dedicate this piece to Will, Jennifer and “The Contessa” of California. Thank you for “throwing the ball back” and inviting me in. Over and Over. Love you!

*Airbnb sitting, cats, bunnies, plants, basic “carry in the mail” and keep an eye on our home.
